Map Of Ancient Mesoamerica » Uxmal

Uxmal is a Mayan site in the western yucatan that reached its apex during the terminal Classic period (800 - 1000 AD.) The site is important because of its extensive Puuc architecture, making it an important center for the Puuc Maya. the Puuc were a merchantile trading community of Maya, who began to develop their own artistic style in building. During the late classic their influence spread far over the Yucatan, as can be evidenced by the many sites which can trace their architecture to the Puuc style.

Sometime around the 11th century AD., construction ceased at Uxmal. Wether this was because of the decline endemic of most Mayan sites in this time will only be known with further excavation.
