A god with many forms is known from ancient times as Bolon Dzacab,
or the Manikin Scepter, as well as several modern indentification
names. He was the third born of the Palenque triad, ancestral gods of the lords of the Mayan city state. He appears
with a serpentine foot and the great smoking obsidian mirror emanating
from his forehead. This god was associated with the sacrifice and
his image often appears in a reduced form as a scepter in the hands
of kings. He becomes a symbol of rulership and the personification
of kingship and priestly power. The classic era Maya called him
Kauil, Bolon Dzacab being adapted in Colonial times. |
